Oh boy, so get this. I wanted to prove to my dad that I “had it”, so I went and worked in an underfunded school. Well when I got there I immediately got bashed in the head and now I can’t remember a thing! Do you remember what happened in High School High?
Pop Quiz Hot Shot!
1) Prior to moving to Marion Berry High, where does Lovitz work and what is his position?
2) Our actual hero is Griff I think. He’s out of the game and has relinquished control of his gang, the school, and the drug trade to Paco. Why has Griff gotten out of the game?
3) What the bad guys show up at the school dance (they aren’t even in school!), Lovitz proposes a solution that everyone agrees is a great idea: A drag race! Who wins?
4) Big Test time, but unfortunately everyone failed! Fine, they all passed, but the bad guys swapped the tests. Why?
5) So who is Mr. A and how did they get into the drug biz?
Bonus Question: So how long does Lovitz and Tia Carrera’s relationship last?
Answers
1) He works at his dad’s school as (newly promoted just prior to quitting) the head of the History department. One thing though, Lovitz doesn’t want to have the shame of nepotism hanging over him. He wants to prove he has the ability himself to be a great teacher. And that’s why he needs to leave.
2) Griff has a mother and a lot of brothers and sisters to take care of and so he has to go straight to make sure they can live the life they deserve. So he’s out of the game, and planning on making an honest living. And that’s where Lovitz can help.
3) Lovitz does, naturally. You see the competition is to see who can drive towards a cliff and bail out last. Well, the other two racers bail out well before Lovitz goes parachuting away in the convertible’s cover. So Lovitz won.
4) They stole all the tests, I think, for two reasons. The main reason was they wanted Griff to be in their gang, and if he reached his potential that was never going to happen. I think the secondary reason was because they knew that Lovitz was just too good of a teacher and the principal just really couldn’t stand it.
5) Mr. A isn’t a Mr. She’s the principal (who could have seen that coming …). She got into thebiz because her late husband was Mr. A, and when he passed away there wasn’t much to do but become the kingpin herself. And it would have been a shame to let a sweet name like Mr. A go to waste.
Bonus Answer: Four months. Lovitz is the principal now, and she’s his subordinate. That’s obviously going to be an issue. But the actual issue ends up being when Lovitz opens the school’s book. Yikes! Turns out Mr. A was using the drug money to close the massive gap in the school’s finances. Lovitz looks in the mirror. “Am I the bad guy?” he says while gently touching his own reflection, attempting to wipe the tear from his glistening cheek. No! He’s Richard Clark. With a little inspiration and a bit of elbow grease he’ll clean up this school (again)! Well … first thing to do is slash the teaching budget, there are far too many here, so while Tia isn’t fired, she’s unhappy that all her friends are fired and dumps him. But no matter. Next, consolidate those classes, we need to shut down the entire second floor of this building (and not just because it isn’t up to code and will definitely cause a lawsuit-inviting injury in the near future). And finally, we need to split the school up to reduce headcount. Phew, he did it. He balanced the budget. And sure, he’s no longer a local hero (quite the opposite), but he is in line to become superintendent … time to clean up even more schools he says (shooting himself a thumbs up in the mirror, and his reflection winks back at him as cartoon music plays).
It’s called High School High 2: Balancing the Budget, and it is no longer a comedy at all, and it more like Won’t Back Down with Maggie Gyllenghall.
