Pop Quiz Hot Shot
1) In the movie they play Craps to win most of their money (and then lose it in Roulette). What is is called when you roll a 7 or 11 on the come-out roll?
2) The director Adrian Lyne was nominated for an Oscar for a true blue (and some would say original and best) erotic thriller. What is the name of this affair-from-hell film?
3) No one knows how to play baccarat right? In the game face cards are worth nothing and aces are worth 1. The player is initially given two cards face up and the total is modulo 10. What do the two cards have to add up to for the game to immediately end?
4) Indecent Proposal has been spoofed a bunch across movies and television. The funniest one I think is in a 1994 episode of a television show based on a movie in which Lisa offers Gary a million “game tokens” in exchange for spending the night with her. What is that television show?
5) In the film there is a song called Help Me Make It Through the Night that is sung by an actor/singer who was in many films. One in particular is one of four versions of the film. Name the singer and film.
Bonus NYTimes Listing Question: I’m going to have to ask for an exact title for this one. This is upcoming and the title here is quite generic:
What is that television film?
Answers
1) A natural. Now what is it called when you roll a 2, 3 or 12? Well that is an immediate missout and that is naturally called a “Crap”.
2) Did I give it away with the last bit? It is Fatal Attraction. I really like that movie. But in a way Basic Instinct is better only because of the deep deep V that Michael Douglas wears in the nightclub scene. That is actually what I judge most movies by, how deep Michael Douglas’ V is in any and all nightclub scenes.
3) I’m not joking when I say this: I steadily became more and more confused as I read the wikipedia about this game. Also it is a game of pure chance? What the hell was happening in the Casino Royale book? I guess it makes sense that they switched it up to poker in the updated movie. Makes no sense.
4) Weird Science! I watched that television show much in my youth. It never occurred to me, but the fact that I could never really take Lee Tergesen seriously as the main character in Oz, is probably because he played Chet in the show. He was great as Chet from what I remember.
5) That would be Kris Kristofferson and the movie was A Star is Born. Funny story, I took a bunch fo LPs from my father and he was like oooo you have to get my favorite one by … what’s the guy’s name. And I jokingly said “Kris Kristofferson?” And he was like holy shit uh yeah that is who I was thinking. And I was like “You mean the A Star is Born soundtrack?” And he was like naw, it was the Breakaway with Rita Coolidge. See … funny story.
Bonus NYTimes Listing Answer: That would be the Star Wars television film The Ewok Adventure. I watched this many times as a kid … it’s awful.
There was a second one … Battle for Endor I think was the other one. The original has a subtitle that occasionally comes up which is Caravan of Courage. They were weird but also kind of fun and silly films.
