The Mighty Ducks Quiz

Who won the Stanley Cup in 1999? The Dallas Stars? I am unfamiliar with such a team, although I do know the Minnesota North Stars. Let’s go!

Pop Quiz Hot Shot!

1) Let’s start with an Emilio question. He comes from a somewhat legendary acting family. He (and his uncle Joe) kept their real names, whereas his father (Martin Sheen) and brother (Charlie Sheen) took on stage names. What is Martin Sheen’s birthname?

2) Come on a journey with me. There was an animated series followup involving humanoid ducks playing hockey and fighting evil (for real). The main character in that was Duke L’Orange, a play off the dish duck a l’orange which involves what kind of sauce?

3) You know this film had a bumping soundtrack. Who sang Good Vibrations?

4) Apparently the film was nominated for AFI’s 100 Cheers special list. So I guess it just got beat out by what 1982 Best Picture winner? Also a sports film it told a real life story about British athletes.

5) Might as well keep it going: What did the aforementioned 1982 movie beat out for Best Picture that year?

Bonus NYTimes Listing Question: The Mighty Ducks pretty much only played on Disney. On March 5, 1994 it went up against this equally good film:

What is this film?

Answers

1) That would be Ramon Estevez. Ramon is also the name of one of the acting siblings as well, although not nearly as famous as Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez.

2) Tough one, but it is a Bigarade sauce, the bigarade being a type of sour orange. The sauce is basically a gastrique sauce (which itself is just caramelized sugar with vinegar and is a sweet and sour base for a lot of sauces) with orange added to it.

3) Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch of course. Good Vibrations was by far their biggest hit, but Wildside also went top 10. Then Mark(y) went mainstream.

4) Chariots of Fire. Yeah … something tells me getting nominated for this list isn’t quite as prestigious as one might think. There is no way it was even close to getting in right?

5) Famously Chariots of Fire beat out Raiders of the Lost Ark for Best Picture. People get all mad about Beatty beating Spielberg as well for Reds, but I can’t speak to that, I haven’t seen it. Raiders of the Lost Ark is better than Chariots of Fire, although while being a classic British biopic, Chariots of Fire is pretty solid stuff. I feel like people make fun of it a lot, but it is pretty good.

Bonus NYTimes Listing Answer: That would be The Untouchables. Solid film. The best part of it is the Connery stuff. I have a long standing hot take: Kevin Costner? Not a very good actor. Basically just is Kevin Costner is everything. This is no different.

Oooo it also went up against future BMT film Ernest Scared Stupid! Now that’s a good film (joking … it is definitely the third best Ernest film though).
